Thistledown Botanicals

Thistledown Botanicals is a small, at-home business on the northern fringe of Lower Michigan’s civilization (also known as Standish, Michigan). Now, I must admit that I have more than a little bias towards Thistledown Botanicals, as the owner of the business happens to be my mother, Holly Hepworth. She makes 100% natural skin care products and cosmetics. Right now, her products range from lip glosses and balms to lotions/lotion bars, sugar scrubs, and body butters; she has even made her own organic sunscreen. However, she is always looking to expand and learn new things. Most recently, she has been bitten by the soap bug…… and badly, there is soap curing EVERYWHERE in the house. She uses a variety of essential oils, fragrance oils, flavoring oils, mica colourants, etc. to make her work not just functional, but smelling and looking beautiful! Some of her soaps are even topped with flowers she dried in her dehydrator.

She is still new to the world of handmade/homemade businesses, and so does not have a website at this time. However, she does have a Facebook page you can visit which is set-up so you can purchase through it via PayPal. Keep checking back to see new products!

Collage of fragrance arts

I want to introduce you to some ‘scent-sational’ artists. Yup, that’s right everyone I am about to mention is a fragrance artist. Alright, so I made that term up, but think about it. We have the preforming arts, the visual arts, the adornment arts, and the culinary arts. However, to my knowledge, there is no category for those that specialize in perfumes, soaps, candles, and other fragrance products, and they, also, involve a lot of art. There is the art of knowing what fragrances do and do not combine well, and there is the art of presentation of the finished work. So, please all me to introduce you to some of my friends from the fragrance arts.

Natural perfume by PND Botanicals

PND Botanicals (Pure Natural Diva)

If you are sensitive to fragrances, you might want to drop by the website of PND Botanicals. Unlike most perfumes on the market, PND Botanicals is made from only natural ingredients and no synthetics. Tania Reubin, the founder of PND Botanicals, herself had difficulties with fragrances. They gave her a dreadful headache. So, upon finding that all the commercial perfumes were created using synthetic ingredients, she set about making her own, natural, perfume. And low and behold, it gave rise to her perfume business: PND Botanicals!

Lemongrass Soap by Dragonfly Dew

Dragonfly Dew

Cathy Green, owner of Dragonfly Dew, has very sensitive skin and wanted a product that would be good for that skin. So she began experimenting with making a product she could use without irritation. Being a gardener and one that doesn’t use artificial chemicals in her garden, she, naturally, didn’t want any artificial chemicals in a product she was applying to her own skin. All her face, body, and bath products are made from natural ingredients to ensure that they are safe to use and have been tested out on herself!

Chai Tea Candle by Columbia Fragrance

The Columbia Fragrance Co.

The Columbia Fragrance Co. was established in 2013 when, like many artisan businesses, it moved out from being a part-time hobby-business into a full-fledged business. They have a really cute motto: “Pleasing discriminating noses … one whiff at a time.” The Columbia Fragrance Co. is focused on bringing a pleasing scent to your home and personal space through their candles. They offer jar candles, tea lights, wickless candles, melts, diffuser oils, and fragrance mists, so, if an open-flame is not an option for your space, that’s not a problem! They have a selection of products that will work for a wide range of spaces.
